The title of Build A Rocket Boys! might as well have been the band’s motto during recording sessions for the album: not that the music reached the more bombastic elements of Elbow’s previous recordings, but because they knew they had to build on the success of its predecessor, 2008’s Mercury Prize-winning The Seldom Seen Kid. A quietly confident follow-up, Build A Rocket Boys! sent Elbow to No 2 in the UK album charts – the highest placement of their career up to that point. Mancunian artist Oliver East once again designed the album cover, and his logo later adorned bottles of Elbow’s limited-edition custom-brand Build A Rocket Boys! beer.
